News - Week ending 26th February

Sion Mission

A full programme of events and experiences has taken place this week when members of the Sion Catholic Community for Evangelism were in school. Students were involved in a variety of workshops, reflecting on and exploring their faith. There were also opportunities for staff, parents, governors and Year 6 pupils from our feeder primaries to join in with the Mission. The week ended with a whole school Mass.

New Extension

The structure is beginning to take shape with the steel framework now in place. Staircases and floors have also been added.

Upgrade to the Phone System

Our phone system was upgraded over the half term holiday. There were some initial teething problems but we hope parents will appreciate the new facility where they can call a dedicated ‘events’ line. This will be updated daily to provide details of sports fixtures, trip information, etc.

GCSE Exams

Modular exams in Maths and Science are being held next week. All Y10 take Maths are on Tuesday morning. Year 11 resits are also on this day in both the morning and afternoon. The science exams are for Sets R1 – R3; Year 11 is on Thursday morning, Year 10 and Year 11 resits are on Friday morning. For further information please contact either Mr Addington (Maths) or Mrs Eulert (Science).

Attendance

At Fisher More we strive for our pupils to have good attendance as there is a direct link with this to attainment. Although our attendance levels are good there is always room for improvement so this will be a main focus of the pastoral team next week.

Magistrates’ Visits

A series of visits by local magistrates will be taking place over the next two weeks for Year 9 students.

Year 7 Bikeability

A 6 week scheme began on Wednesday this week from 2.30pm to 4.30pm to encourage safe use of bikes. More information about this project is available from Mr Atkin.

Friends of Fisher More

The newly formed group is making great headway with several projects which will enhance and benefit our pupils’ education. Year 10 students Laura Dickinson and Isobel Church designed the winning logo which will be used on the Friends’ mailshots and the school website. Watch out for information coming home soon about the introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and a project supporting the school’s 3As – Attendance, Attainment and Attitude. The Friends next meeting is on Tuesday, March 30th, 7.45pm at Café Cargo, Foulridge.

Towerwood Visit

Pupils had a very enjoyable stay at Towerwood in the Lake District last week. The group was led by Mr Reeves and accompanied by Mr Hird, Miss Foster, Miss Sagar and Mr Bowling. Special thanks go to Matthew Fenney, James Barrowclough and Roisin Ogden (Year 11) and Amy Kitchen (Year 10) for their enthusiastic and helpful participation in the trip.

Extension Work and BSF

The steel structure of the extension is now under construction. Architects visited school to present three potential options for our school’s future transformation under BSF. County now have to present a submission to the DCSF, outlining their plans for the 8 schools involved in this very exciting project.

Year 11 Photographs

Photographers will be in school on Tuesday, 9th February to capture a group photo of Year 11 and also individual portraits. It is vital that all students are on time this day as any late comers will delay the process and may mean they are unable to take part in the group photograph. The photos will be available to order on line, full details to be supplied.

Year 11 Information Session with St Mary’s College

Students wishing to continue their post-16 studies at St Mary’s College will have a chance to find out what is on offer there when St Mary’s staff visit school next Tuesday, 9th February from 1.30pm till 3.30pm.

On Wednesday, 10th February starting at 6.30pm, Year 9 students and their families will be given the chance to find out about the options on offer for Year 10. FMFM

Fisher More’s radio station FMFM will be broadcasting to the community for the 3rd year on Wednesday and Thursday next week. DJs are from Year 9 and have received tuition from Rock FM. This year the pupils have already pre-recorded interviews with Corrie's Julia Haworth and cricketer Michael Brown and with live guests including England Rugby legend Charlie Hodgson and Accrington Stanley player Chris Turner, it promises to be really good again.
