Thank you to everyone for their support.
Following on from our successful Sponsored Walk on the final day of the summer term last year, we will be hosting another sponsored event on Monday 17 July, 2017. Last year we raised £1,800 towards the cost of a new motorised projection screen for the Sports Hall. The screen has now been installed and is making a huge difference to events in the Sports Hall, like school Masses, Sports Awards afternoon etc.
This year, pupils can choose between challenging themselves to walk 5 miles in less than an hour and a half or stay completely silent during our afternoon ‘Readathon’. The walking route will predominantly follow public footpaths around the area of our school, Pendle Vale and Colne Primet Academy.
We are encouraging all pupils to seek sponsorship for both events. All monies raised will go towards our fundraising drive to raise £200,000 for new floodlit netball and tennis courts. Planning permission has already been secured for the new courts and is in place for two years. The school can access grants from organisations such as Sport England. However, we need to raise as much money as possible ourselves to become eligible for match-funding e.g. every £1 we raise can be match-funded by organisations such as Sport England. If everyone in school raised £10 from the sponsored walk or ‘Readathon’ then this would be £6,500 raised in total – organisations such as Sport England could then match another £6,500.
Monday 17 July, 2017 will be a non-uniform day and all pupils are asked to contribute £2 for this. Any pupils wishing to wear fancy dress for the walk will be ‘fined’ £5. It is hoped that each pupil can set themselves a target of raising £10 in sponsorship. Lessons will take place as normal up until lunchtime, therefore normal equipment will be required for these lessons.
Pupils may walk in appropriate fancy dress, however they must bear in mind some of the route will be on grass public footpaths and some of these paths are uphill. Trainers with grip or walking boots must be worn. Pupils are advised not to wear their best trainers as they will come back dirty. They should also bring a drink with them. Any pupils who suffer from asthma must also ensure that they carry their inhaler.
Leading up to the walk/’Readathon’, all students will be informed of the classrooms to be used, the walking route, marshalling points and what is expected from them throughout the afternoon. There will be a prize for the pupil and the form raising the most money and the best fancy dress – staff or student!
