Drop Everything And Read (DEAR)
DEAR or Drop Everything and Read is an initiative that does exactly what it says. Year 8 pupils and staff alike are given time during Personal Development to put everything else to one side and read a book. The repetition of DEAR across the school week and the year group ensures that pupils are practising the important skills needed for their education and are doing so with their peers and their form tutor. This again is enhanced by the use of Accelerated Reader.
An important facet of the Drop Everything And Read programme (DEAR) is the Accelerated Reading. Once a fortnight, pupils will have a library lesson (during an English lesson) in which they can return their books, take quizzes to check recall and comprehension, and earn points in the process. To help with this, we use a computerised reading programme called Accelerated Reader (AR). This programme is used at KS3 with Years 7, 8 and 9.
