Options Information

Year 9 Options

At Ss Fisher & More High School, we hope to provide all of our pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum that suits their individual needs and increases the opportunities they have later in life.

Year 9 is an important year for our pupils as they are asked to choose the subjects they intend to study at GCSE. We know this can be a worrying time for some pupils and parents so we aim to make the process as trouble-free as possible.

Subjects

In Year 9 pupils should be giving careful consideration to the subjects they choose. It is important to keep an open mind and not discount any subjects. This means sustained effort in all subjects throughout the academic year.

In this school, at KS4, it will be compulsory to study:

  • English Language*
  • English Literature*
  • Mathematics
  • Core Science
  • Additional Science
  • Religious Studies

*In certain cases, it may be appropriate to study a single GCSE in English instead of English Language and English Literature but this will be decided by the curriculum leader.

In addition to this, you will be asked to pick three more subjects from three Option blocks that will be offered. As an example, in 2016, the option blocks were as follows:

Option A

Option B

Option C

History

Geography

French

Resistant Materials

Sociology

Triple Science

Food Technology

Art

Music

Graphics

Drama

Business Studies

ICT

Fast track Spanish/Statistics

Photography

Computer Science

Spanish

PE BTEC

The Options Process

In 2016-17, we will begin with an Options Evening for parents and pupils on 2nd February 2017. After this meeting, pupils will be asked to complete an initial form to assess the likely uptake of certain subjects. From this information, the option blocks will be formed and pupils will be asked to make their initial choices. If necessary, this process may be repeated. Finally, a letter will be sent out at the start of the summer term, confirming your child’s choices.

Should you have any concerns at any stage of the process, please contact Mr Bridge, Deputy Headteacher - bridge.d@fishermore.lancs.sch.uk.
